Bible Reading

Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God. He removed the foreign altars and the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. He commanded Judah to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, and to obey his laws and commands. He removed the high places and incense altars in every town in Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him. He built up the fortified cities of Judah, since the land was at peace. No one was at war with him during those years, for the Lord gave him rest.

Devotion

In the southern kingdom, Rehoboam was succeeded by his son Abijah for 3 years. While Abijah’s reign was short, it was eventful in that he defeated Jeroboam in a massive war. Then Asa followed his father Abijah, reigning for 41 years. Asa was the model of devotion to the Lord for most of his reign. He lead the people to walk in God’s ways. Yet near the end of his life he faltered in his faith and became the prime example of a man who did not finish well. Asa began his reign well with a spiritual reformation of Judah. He knew that faithfulness to God was a key to the success of his reign and the peace and prosperity of the kingdom.

The Big Question

Asa was intentional in bringing about a spiritual renewal in the land of Judah. He honored God in his personal life and in the corporate life of the nation. What intentional steps are you taking to experience spiritual renewal in your personal life? What intentional steps are you taking to bring about spiritual renewal in your home, in your workplace, and in your community?
