Job 6:14-15

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

“A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends,
even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
But my brothers are as undependable as intermittent streams,
as the streams that overflow

– Job 6:14-15

All my intimate friends detest me;
those I love have turned against me.

– Job 19:19

Then Job replied:

“I have heard many things like these;
miserable comforters are you all!
Will your long-winded speeches never end?
What ails you that you keep on arguing?
I also could speak like you,
if you were in my place;
I could make fine speeches against you
and shake my head at you.
But my mouth would encourage you;
comfort from my lips would bring you relief.

– Job 16:1-5

Devotion

As Job entered a season of intense suffering, the thing that he needed the most was the support of those around him. His friends were full of terrible advice and anything but helpful and supportive words. They were quick to become accusers and judges, rather than allies and comforters.

As we walk through life with other people, it is important to analyze the quality of our relationships and appreciate the people who are true friends. Which people in your life quickly rally to support you when you need it? Do you have “friends” who disappear when you need them most? Even worse, are your friends like Job’s, friends who speak words of death rather than words of life?

On the flip side, we need to be sure that we are the right kind of friend to others. Are you the kind of person who rushes to the support of your friends and family? We should refuse to add to the negativity in our friends’ lives. When you see a person in need, hurry to their side, even when it costs you something.

The Big Question

What type of friends do you surround yourself with? Do you have the right people in your corner? What kind of friend are you to others? Are you the kind of friend that others should be seeking out? What could you do to become a better friend today?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence, reflecting on God’s Word.
