Psalm 62: 1-6

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

Truly my soul finds rest in God;
    my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
How long will you assault me?
    Would all of you throw me down—
    this leaning wall, this tottering fence?
Surely they intend to topple me
    from my lofty place;
    they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
    but in their hearts they curse.
Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
    my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

– Psalm 62:1-6 NIV

Devotion

Many people turn to the Psalms for comfort during difficult times. David’s expressions of his feelings and his faith in God give a framework for how we can talk to God about our own problems. Prayer can help ease our tension in times of emotional stress. In this Psalm, David talks about the importance of trusting God and how it changes his outlook on life. He calls God his rock, salvation, and fortress. He trusts that God will rescue him from his enemies. David expresses his feelings to God and then reaffirms his faith. When people say or do hurtful things to us, we do not need to take revenge or be held captive by anger and bitterness. God is also our rock and salvation. There is nothing that can shake us when we truly rest and trust in God’s strength.

The Big Question

How do you react when people say or do hurtful things against you? Has patience been an even bigger obstacle for you than trust? Our culture promotes the lie that instant gratification brings lasting happiness. How can you separate the lies we are handed every day by our society from the truths of the value of patience and trust in God’s timing? Bring your anxieties to God in prayer today and see what He will do!
