1 Corinthians 15:35, 42-49

Spend time in prayer and silence with God, asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

But someone may ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?” So it will be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So, it is written, “the first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam (Jesus), a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man Adam was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. As the earthly man, so are those who are from the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven.

– 1 Corinthians 15:35, 42-49

Devotion

The body that was given to Adam was always subject to death. However, by resurrection we get a body that is incorruptible. According to Paul, we will get glory, color, beauty, and power with the new resurrection body. Paul contrasts the natural man, Adam, with the spiritual man, Jesus. Adam was created from the dust of the earth. Jesus has always been with the Father in heaven. Today we bear the image of the natural man. Paul states that the natural man cannot inherit the kingdom of God. But if we are trusting in Jesus, we are also in Christ (spiritual man). Therefore, we are joined to Him and have a hope – the hope of the resurrection in an eternal body, which will forever be with Christ. As a believer, we look forward to that day when we will bear the image of the heavenly.

The Big Question

In what ways do you resemble the natural man, Adam? In what ways do you resemble the spiritual man, Jesus? What hope do you take away from this passage of Scripture?
