Acts 2:42-47

Spend time in prayer and silence with God, asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

They devoted themselves to the apostle’s teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Devotion

Luke gives us an intimate glimpse into the life of the early church. From verse forty-two, we see that the early believers were devoted to four things: the Apostle’s Teaching, the Fellowship, the Breaking of Bread, and Prayer. These distinctives are what marked the early church. As the early church devoted itself to these four things, the Lord added to their number. The early church was devoted to the Word of God, to each other, to sharing common meals and to prayer. They shared in each other’s lives at the deepest level. They were not superficial. These people didn’t just play church! They “were together” whether they were worshipping corporately or privately in their own homes. The fact is they were deeply connected to one another because of their common faith in Jesus. In this fast-paced culture, we have lost the sacred art of community. I have noticed a big difference in America in the last 50 years. We live in a time where technology allows us to be more connected than ever before, but we also realize that more people feel lonely and disconnected than in any other time in human history.

The Big Question

Are you experiencing biblical community like that described in Acts 2:42-47? Are you deeply connected to other believers? Are you connected in a Life Group at Oak Pointe Church? Who are your 2 am friends?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence, reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
