Genesis 21:1-7

Begin your time today by getting quiet before the Lord.

Bible Reading

“Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what He had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Sarah said, ‘God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears this will laugh with me.’ And she added, ‘Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.'”

Devotion

God was true to His word and character. In Genesis 15:1, God Almighty (El-Shaddai) promised Abraham he would have a son in his old age. In Genesis chapter twenty one, God Almighty keeps His promise. Despite Abraham and Sarah’s doubts, God was faithful to accomplish what He had promised. In this passage we see that God is faithful to His word and is gracious to those who trust Him.

The fact that God is trustworthy makes it a little easier to trust Him. Throughout scripture, God’s character is clearly seen and remains constant throughout the Bible. The God of creation in Genesis 1:1 is the same God on the throne in Revelation 22. Because God’s character doesn’t change, our faith has a firm foundation on which to build. God’s Word is filled with many marvelous promises and the God who makes them is trustworthy and true.

The Big Question

As you think about God’s unchanging character, which promise from God’s Word is most meaningful to you? Why?

Conclude in prayer and silence reflecting on how God has revealed Himself to you today.
