Genesis 2:20-25

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking him to meet you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Devotion

When God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18), God was declaring that man was created and designed to experience deep intimacy with another person of the opposite sex.

God designed marriage to fill this deep need for relationship between a man and a woman. This relationship is described as the two becoming one flesh. Marriage is part of the discipleship process, the process of becoming more like Jesus. It is in the intimacy of marriage that deep, painful, issues can be brought to the surface and worked on so that both spouses grow closer as a couple and become more like Christ.

The Heart and Soul of a Real Marriage is offered by Oak Pointe Church to help married couples improve their marriages and to become more like Christ. If you are married or are planning to be married and have not taken this course, we encourage you to check it out in the near future.

The Big Question

If you are married, is your marriage reflecting the “oneness” described above? Reflect on what you can do to help make your marriage the best it can be. Have you received your spouse as God’s gift to you? If you are not married, ponder this question: What am I looking for in a spouse? What qualities am I most concerned about?

Conclude in prayer and silence reflecting on what you’ve learned.
