Haggai 2:20-23

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

The word of the Lord came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: “Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I will shake the heavens and the earth. I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother. “‘On that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you My signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”

– Haggai 2:20-23

Devotion

Here Haggai is prophesying about a future time period that many scholars believe is the Great Tribulation. At this future time, God will destroy all false authority and power; and, finally, fulfill the promise of the establishment of true authority. The prophecy looks forward to a day when the Lord Jesus will come (second advent) at the end of the Great Tribulation. God’s promise is that not only will the Messiah come through the line of David, He will also come through the line of Zerubbabel. The Lord Jesus is just as much the Son of Zerubbabel as He is the Son of David. Haggai puts Christ in His proper position as the moral ruler, the civil ruler, and the King to rule over this earth in that day.

The Big Question

God is always looking toward the future potential of His people, instead of focusing on their past failures. When God looks at you, He sees the same thing-your future potential as you learn to walk in fellowship with Him. Although the picture of the signet ring applied to the Messiah who would come through the line of Zerubbabel, take a moment and imagine yourself as a special signet ring on God’s right hand. Imagine God wearing a ring with your picture engraved on it. How does that make you feel?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
