James 1:2-12

Spend time in prayer and silence with God, asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

Consider it pure joy my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even as he goes about his business. Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.

– James 1:2-12

Devotion

The Epistle of James is a very practical book. The theme of faith is seen throughout his entire epistle. The emphasis of James is on the works, which are produced by faith. James wrote this letter to teach believers the practice of Christianity. He insists that if we have real faith, we will show it by acting like Christ. In these first few verses, he addresses the Christian’s response to the adversity and trials of life. Two words jump out at us in this text: joy and perseverance. It is faith that allows us to have joy in the midst of adversity. It is faith that allows us to persevere through adversity. Life is tough! Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33). It is our faith in the Lord Jesus and His promises that keep us pressing forward. He closes out this passage with the promise of “the crown of life” for those who persevere in their love for God.

The Big Question

Are you facing significant trials and suffering in your life right now? How is your faith enabling you to keep on going despite difficult times? Are you able to experience joy in the midst of your struggles? How do you feel about the promise of a “crown of life” for those who love God?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence, reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
