John 12:1-11

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, the one Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for Him there; Martha was serving them, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. Then Mary took a pound of perfume, pure and expensive nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped His feet with her hair. So the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was about to betray Him), said, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it. Jesus answered, “Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of my burial. For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.” Then a large crowd of the Jews learned He was there. They came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, the one He had raised from the dead. Bur the chief priests had decided to kill Lazarus also, because he was the reason many of the Jews were deserting them and believing in Jesus.

Devotion

Jesus is getting ready to enter the final week (Passion Week) of His physical life on earth. The religious leaders are looking for the right opportunity to seize Him. They not only want to kill Jesus but Lazarus as well. They must not only kill Jesus but all evidence of the miracles that verify His claims.

The Big Question

One week before His death, Jesus came again to the home of Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. What was Martha doing? What was Mary doing? Do you notice a pattern with these two sisters? How would you describe the difference between them, in terms of the way they showed their love for Jesus? How do you show your love for Jesus? How did the Jewish leaders react to the immense amount of attention that Jesus and Lazarus were getting?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence, reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
