John 1:35-42

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

The next day John (the Baptist) was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” “Come,” He replied, “and you will see.” So, they went and saw where He was staying, and spent that day with Him. It was about the tenth hour. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

Devotional

Right from the outset, Jesus determined that His work would be carried forward by His followers after He had finished His part of the work. He chose men and women from various walks of life, calling them to leave their regular ways of life in order to be with Him, to learn from Him, and to serve Him. God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things in this world. Robert Coleman catches the heart of Jesus when he writes, “Jesus’ concern was not with programs to reach the multitudes but with men/women the multitudes would follow.”

The Big Question

Some of Jesus’ disciples had first been disciples of John the Baptist. After John declared Jesus to be the Lamb of God, these disciples immediately began to follow Jesus. Why do you think John’s life’s example and teaching caused them to be so willing to follow Jesus? What people has God used in your life that you would want to follow Jesus yourself? In the Book of Acts, we read, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished, and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” The early disciples turned the world upside down with the “Good News” of Jesus! How are you turning the world upside down for Jesus?
