John 14:1-9a

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you really knew Me, you would know My Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered, “Don’t you know Me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father.”

Devotion

Out of all of Jesus’ statements about Himself, this is probably the most comprehensive. Jesus declares to His disciples, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life.” He is the only WAY to the Father. He is the embodiment of all TRUTH. He is the giver and sustainer of LIFE. From this passage, there is no mistaking the identity and mission of Jesus. Jesus came to reconcile mankind to God through His atoning sacrifice on the cross.

The Big Question

What promise did Jesus make here and why would it be comforting to the disciples in their historical context? How are these words comforting to you? What is significant about the three “I Am” statements in verse six? Do you KNOW Jesus?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence, reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
