Bible Reading

“The true Light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made by Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of a human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the father full of grace and truth.”

– John 1:9-14

Devotional

Jesus, the Light of the World, broke into human history at its darkest moment. For 400 years, there was no prophetic word from God through a prophet. Yet when Jesus spoke, the crowds were amazed at His teaching, because He taught as “One who had authority”, and not as their teachers of the law. These 400 years of darkness prepared the way for the True Light of the World to present Himself and His message to a lost world. The contrast between the darkness of the world and light of Christ was intentional. “In the fullness of time, God sent forth His Son”. Jesus’ true spiritual light would be contrasted with the political and religious philosophies of the world. The stage was set. The conflict begins, and God’s divine plan unfolds before an unbelieving world.

The Big Question

Based on the dark/light principle, the darker our world becomes the brighter our light ought to shine. The Light of the World broke into darkness and became the light of men. As followers of Christ, we are called to let our light shine before men. How are you letting the light of Jesus shine in your world?
