John 20:30-31

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

– John 20:30-31

Devotion

John’s emphasis on showing Jesus to be the Christ, the Son of the Living God is his stated purpose for selecting the material he did in writing his Gospel. He was not writing to give us a chronological account of the life of Christ. Matthew, Mark and Luke did this. John writes to confirm Jesus’ identity. Many scholars believe that a heresy known as Gnosticism had taken hold late in the first century. John writes his gospel to refute this heresy and reaffirm the orthodox teachings concerning the identity and mission of Christ.

The Big Question

There are many religious groups today that teach that Jesus was not the divine Son of God. This would put them at odds with historical biblical Christianity. Whenever you try and reduce Christ to just a good moral man or teacher, then the foundation collapses and Christianity just becomes another “works-based” religion. In this amazing story of God’s love, mercy, grace and forgiveness, Jesus is the central figure. Without Him, we are still dead in our sins. Have you put your faith in Jesus Christ the divine Son of God? Is God writing a story of redemption in your life? If so, thank Him for His amazing grace!

Conclude your time in prayer and silence, reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
