John 3:1-2

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with Him.”

– John 3:1-2

Devotion

Nicodemus was a prominent leader in the Jewish community. He came at night, in secret, to inquire about Jesus’ identity. Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus to be a teacher sent from God. He no doubt had heard Jesus teach and saw Him perform some of His miracles. Jesus took this opportunity to teach Nicodemus spiritual truths which would unlock the key to His identity and mission. Throughout history there have been many enlightened teachers. These are people like Buddha, Confucius, Mohammad, Aristotle and Plato. Nicodemus equated Jesus with one of these great teachers.

The Big Question

Many people today acknowledge Jesus to be a great teacher. They would equate Him with the other great teachers/philosophers throughout human history. Yet, Jesus claimed to be so much more. None of these other great teachers declared themselves to be equal with God. Do you see Jesus as just a great teacher? Has your life been transformed by the words of Jesus? Who is Jesus to you?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence, reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
