John 8:12

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

“I am the Light of the World…I am the Door…I am the Good Shepherd…I am the Resurrection and the Life…I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life…I am the True Vine…”

– John 8:12, 10:7, 10:11, 11:25, 14:6, 15:1

Devotion

In each of these descriptions, Jesus uses a metaphor, taking the current situation and using it to amplify a description of Himself. The metaphors must be read in the context of what He was doing or teaching at the time he declared it of Himself. What is important is to realize how EXCLUSIVE His claims were. To some who heard them they objected, were offended and retaliated or abandoned following Him. For His followers, these claims brought incredible comfort and assurance that following Jesus was the right decision for their present life and eternity.

The Big Question

As you look at Jesus’ statements concerning Himself, how does this impact how you view Christ and His mission? Do you find comfort and assurance in the “I Am” statements found in the Gospel of John? Which of the “I Am” statements is most meaningful to you? Why?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence, asking God to meet with you and speak to you.
