John 8:52-58

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

At this the Jews exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. Are you greater than our Father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the One who glorifies Me. Though you do not know Him, I know Him. If I said I did not know Him I would be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His Word. Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”

“You are not yet fifty years old,” the Jews said to Him, “and you have seen Abraham!” “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I Am!” At this, they picked up stones to stone Him, but Jesus hid Himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Devotional

Who did Jesus claim to be? In the above passage, Jesus uses the name of God that was revealed to Moses in the burning bush in Exodus chapter three. Jesus claimed to precede Abraham. When they questioned His words, He said, “Before Abraham was born, I Am.” They clearly knew what He was claiming so they picked up stones to kill Him for blasphemy. Jesus would have a similar discussion with the religious leaders in John chapter ten. They said to Him, “If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe.” Later in that conversation, Jesus would say, “I and my Father are one.” Once again the Jews picked us stones to kill Him. When Jesus questioned their reason for stoning Him, they replied, “Because you a mere man, claim to be God.”

The Big Question

Jesus came to reveal the Father to us. As a result of His coming, we each must answer the question that Jesus asked of His disciples: “Who do you say that I am?” We all must respond to the claims of Christ. So, what about you? Who is Jesus to you?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
