Joshua 21:43-45

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking him to meet you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there. The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD handed all their enemies over to them. Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.

Devotion

We live in a world where reciprocity rules. Many people only give to others with a hope of that person reciprocating in the future. Our allegiance and devotion to someone is given as long as that person returns the same allegiance toward us. Fortunately, God does not operate on the same plane of reciprocity.

One of the great qualities of the Lord is His never ending faithfulness. As Paul writes in 2 Timothy 2:13, “If we are faithless, He will remain faithful, for He cannot disown Himself.” Faithfulness is a major part of who God is. He cannot be unfaithful, just like He cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18) or commit any other sin. Israel had built a monument to God’s faithfulness as they crossed the Jordan River to take the Promised Land, and they are continuing to see God’s faithfulness as He saw through their possession of it. “Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the House of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.” What an amazing testimony to all that God did for the people. He had completely held up His end of the bargain. Unfortunately, throughout Scripture, and in our own life experience, we see that we as people are completely unable to be faithful to God in the same way that He is faithful to us. Still despite our lack of faithfulness, we experience God’s faithfulness to us.

The Big Question

What are some ways that God has demonstrated His faithfulness to you in the past year? Spend some time reflecting on the faithfulness of God in your life even when events have not unfolded as you would have planned.

Conclude in prayer and silence, reflecting on what you’ve learned.
