Bible Reading

You must distinguish between what is sacred and what is common, between what is ceremonially unclean and what is clean. And you must teach the Israelites all the decrees that the Lord has given them through Moses.”

– Leviticus 10:10-11

The Lord also said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.

– Leviticus 19:1-2

Devotion

These passages show the main theme of Leviticus. The Ten Commandments, found in Exodus 20, were God’s foundational laws. Leviticus explains and supplements the Ten Commandments with guidelines and principles that helped the Israelites practice the Commandments.

God gave the laws to the Israelites with the sole purpose of teaching them how to distinguish right from wrong, the unclean from the clean (or unholy from the holy) and the common from the uncommon. If the people lived by these laws, they would be set apart from other nations as holy and dedicated to serving God. In doing so, they would be a witness to the world, bringing glory to God.

The primary purpose of the ceremonial laws found in Leviticus was to point forward to Jesus. Therefore, following all of these laws is no longer necessary after Jesus death and resurrection. While we are no longer bound by these ceremonial laws, the principles behind them, to worship and love a holy God, should guide our conduct and help us distinguish from unholy living and holy living. In doing so, we too, will be a witness to the world.
