Leviticus 3:1

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking him to meet you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

When anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess in what way they have sinned. As a penalty for the sin they have committed, they must bring to the Lord a female lamb or goat from the flock as a sin offering[a]; and the priest shall make atonement for them for their sin. – Leviticus 5:5-6

In this way the priest will make atonement for them before the Lord, and they will be forgiven for any of the things they did that made them guilty.” Leviticus 6:7

“‘If your offering is a fellowship offering, and you offer an animal from the herd, whether male or female, you are to present before the Lord an animal without defect.

– Leviticus 3:1

Devotion

The Guilt Offering was required by God for two sins: sins against God and sins against one’s neighbor. The ritual involved confession of the sin and restoration. The Guilt offering illustrates that it is a very costly thing for people to commit sin and for God to cleanse it. Our sins hurt God and they hurt others. True repentance will always lead to a desire for restitution, for restoration of fellowship with God and others. We will want to make things right with God and with others we have sinned against.

Forgiveness comes only as a result of the death of an innocent sacrifice. In the passages above, the innocent sacrifice is an animal. For us today, Jesus, the one who shed his blood on the cross is our innocent sacrifice. God made his own son Jesus, an offering for our sin.

In the crucifixion of Jesus we see the fulfillment of the guilt and peace offering. His death was the perfect offering and He is the only way to peace or fellowship with God (2 Corinthians 5:16-21 and Colossians 1:20).

The Big Question

Is there unconfessed sin in your life that is preventing you from fellowship with God and with others? If so, confess it to God and ask for forgiveness.

Conclude in prayer and silence reflecting on what you’ve learned.
