Luke 8:22-25

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into the boat and set out. As they sailed, He fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked His disciples. In fear and amazement, they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him.”

Devotion

Today we see an example of Jesus’ control over nature and the physical world. This, no doubt, was very unsettling for the disciples. We see this in verse twenty-five, “In fear and amazement, they asked one another, ‘Who is this?’. Nobody in the history of mankind had ever shown that he could control nature in this way! Jesus’ control over the natural elements once again points to the truth in John 1:3, “Through Him (Jesus) all things were made…”. In the book of Colossians, Paul states it this way, “For by Him (Jesus) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” Jesus created the physical realm and exercises control and authority over it.

The Big Question

What caused so much fear in the disciples? How did Jesus stop the raging storm? How did this miracle change the way the disciples viewed Jesus? How did this miracle change the way the disciples would relate to Jesus? How does this miracle impact your faith in Jesus?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence, reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
