Luke 9:28-36a

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

About eight days after Jesus said this, He took Peter, John and James with Him and went up on a mountain to pray. As He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about His departure, which He was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to Him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to Him.” When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone.

Devotion

On this mountain, Peter, James and John would see Jesus transfigured into a brilliant white being – a similar description John would see again when Jesus appeared to him while exiled on the Isle of Patmos (Rev. 1:13-14). God once again affirms that Jesus is His Son. Scripture leaves no doubt that Jesus knew who He was and why He came into the world. God the Father confirms this at His baptism and His transfiguration.

The Big Question

The closer Jesus gets to the cross, the more resolute He becomes. His mission is clear. His identity confirmed. Now comes the difficult task of making His way toward Jerusalem knowing the horror that awaits Him there. How does Jesus’ appearance with Moses and Elijah impact your trust in the person and work of Jesus? How does the Father’s affirmation of the Son impact your faith walk?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence, reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
