Mark 10:17-22

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up to Him and fell on his knees before Him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call Me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and your mother.'” “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” He said. “Go, sell everything you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come follow me.” At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Devotion

In the above text, Jesus invites this young man to “come follow Me”. Unlike the twelve who dropped everything to follow Jesus, this man walked away sad and unwilling to forsake everything to follow Jesus. Jesus addresses a heart issue with this young man that would keep him from making a deeper commitment to follow Christ.

The Big Question

What kept this young man from following Jesus? Why did Jesus bring attention to the young man’s wealth? Despite this young man’s inability to follow, how did Jesus feel towards him? What might be keeping you from experiencing a deeper walk with Christ?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
