Matthew 4:1-4

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting 40 days and forty nights, He was hungry. The tempter came to Him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

Devotional

In Hebrews chapter two we read, “Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.” Jesus modeled for us a life that is totally devoted to God. He prepared for temptation by fasting and praying. When the temptations came, Jesus resisted the tempter by using God’s Word in defense. In this first temptation, Jesus’ challenge or temptation was to exercise His self-will. Instead, Jesus modeled how to live one’s life according to the Father’s will.

The Big Question

How did the Father’s affirmation “this is my beloved Son in who I am well pleased” prepare Jesus for His 40 days in the wilderness? Have you ever felt the Father’s affirmation? How does Jesus’ approach to resisting temptation challenge you? Do you struggle in exercising your self-will? What will it take for you to say, “Not my will but Thy will be done!”?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
