Matthew 4:5-7

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

Then the devil took Him to the holy city and had Him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command His angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’

– Matthew 4:5-7

Devotional

In this second temptation, Jesus is challenged by the devil to step out of His servant position and assert Himself. Satan knew who Jesus was. Here He is being tempted to step outside the Father’s will and assert His deity and position as the Son of God. Yet, Jesus modeled a servant who “humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross” (Phil. 2:8b). Once again Jesus counters this temptation by accurately quoting the Word of God.

The Big Question

David wrote, “I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11). We are beginning to see a pattern in Jesus’ approach to resisting temptation. How well do you know the Word of God? Have you stored away the treasure of God’s Word in your heart for the day of battle? Could you memorize Psalm 119:11 this next week? The challenge is on!

Conclude your time in prayer and silence reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
