Matthew 5:13-16

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

– Matthew 5:13-16

Devotion

Here Jesus uses two metaphors to communicate that as His followers we are to have an influence for good in the world. As we live out the eight beatitudes found in Matthew 5:3-11, we will have a profound impact on the world around us! As salt, we influence our world for Christ. As light, we reveal the truth of God in a very dark world. When we are acting as salt and light in this world, we glorify our Father in heaven!

The Big Question

As followers of Jesus, we are called to be salt and light in this world. Unfortunately, we don’t always reflect Christ in word and deed. Why is there a tendency to conceal our faith in Jesus? If people do notice our faith, who should it point them to? What adjustments do you need to make to more accurately represent Jesus in this world?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
