Psalm 62:1-2

Truly my soul finds rest in God;
my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

John 14:1

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

Devotion

Psalm 62 is one of the “only” psalms. The word “only” is very significant in these psalms. The “only” psalms are songs of trust. They are songs that express confidence in the power and character of God. In the opening verses of this psalm, we see an “only” declaration: God is my only source of hope. David experienced both the good and bad that life had to offer. Most scholars believe that David wrote this psalm while his son Absalom is marching into Jerusalem to forcibly take over his throne. Imagine the emotional pain of being betrayed by your own flesh and blood. This would have been a very difficult and painful time period in David’s life. Yet we discover that David found a place where his soul could truly rest. According to David, there was “only” One place he could go to find rest. He writes that God alone was his Salvation, his Rock, and his Fortress.

In these opening verses, David is expressing his trust in God. He sees God as his only source of hope. Before Jesus was arrested and crucified, He said to His disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in Me.” Jesus knew that His disciples were about to experience the most painful time period in their lives. What does He tell them? Trust God! Trust Me! Jesus knew that He and the Father was their only source of hope.

Questions to Ponder:

Who or what is your source of rest this morning? Do you truly trust God/Jesus like your life depends on it? Is God your only source of hope? When life gets tough, where do you turn to for help?
