My Only Place of Rest

May 20, 2020

Psalm 62:5-8

Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.

Matthew 11:28-29

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Devotion

In this third stanza of David’s song, we discover the “only” admonition: Find rest only in God. David is admonishing his own soul to stay in that place of rest. David is not asking God for some outrageous thing here. David is asking God to put into his heart the thing that God wants done. He declares that God is his Refuge. As David vacillates between faith and fear, he realizes that he must come back to that place of trust. Despite all the turmoil in David’s life, he finds himself coming back to his only Refuge!

Like David, we need to be constantly reminding ourselves to stay in that place of rest. Our soul trusts. Our soul questions. When we focus on our troubles, we begin to doubt God. When we find ourselves drifting between faith and fear, we need to come back to that place of trust. Often when I am struggling in my faith, I take a pilgrimage back to the cross of Christ. It is there where my faith journey began. It is there where my faith is renewed! It is only at the cross where my heart reconnects with God, and He enables me to see my circumstances through His eyes.

Questions to Ponder:

Jesus admonishes us to bring our burdens to Him. He promises that we will find rest for our weary souls when we trust Him with our troubles. Is your soul able to find rest in these troubling times? Are you able to pour out your heart to your heavenly Father? Do you trust God with all the details of your complicated life?

Suggested Prayer
Father, You are trustworthy, You are faithful. Thank You for Your Agape love. I take refuge in You and know that I can share all things with You, because You see it anyway and You want me to bring it to you. You even ask me to bring my doubts, concerns, struggles, lack of faith – you want it all. Father, teach me how to pray and remind me to be honest and open before You. In the Name of Jesus Christ I ask. Amen.
