Numbers 6:22-27 & Genesis 12:1-3

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking him to meet you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,
“The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”‘
So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”

– Numbers 6:22-27

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

– Genesis 12:1-3

Devotion

The covenant of blessing that God made with Abraham for Israel is repeated again and again throughout scripture. In Numbers 6, God commands Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Israel. The blessing comes from the LORD to the people of Israel, not from the priests, and parallels the blessing that Abraham’s descendants would receive through God’s promise to them. The blessing is a reminder of the God’s promise to bless the people, keep them, have His face to shine upon them, be gracious to them, and have His gaze upon them. The people will be blessed because they have the greatest privilege on earth; to be called the people of God! They will experience true blessing because they are being led by God’s presence, they carry God’s name, and they serve him with their very lives.

Similarly, one of the greatest blessings that we can receive is to be grafted into God’s kingdom, uphold his name, and serve Him with our lives. This privilege is unfortunately often times overlooked, but we as followers of Christ bear His very name, His image, and are representatives and ambassadors of God throughout the world. What an outstanding privilege indeed!

The Big Question

Does your life reflect the privilege that you have to serve the LORD and bear His name as His ambassador, or is it questionable whether or not those who you are in contact with each day even know that you have a relationship with the LORD?

Conclude in prayer and silence reflecting on what you’ve learned.
