Devotion

Our focus this week is the power of words. The book of Proverbs repeatedly speaks of the power and quality of speech – what we say, how we say it, and how well we listen. Each day this week we’ll cover another characteristic of beautiful speech. Based on the verses you read today, what attribute should distinguish your speech?

A mouth full of gravel does not sound great, nor does hate or calamity. But these are some of the consequences that we may experience in our lives if we fail to receive and speak the truth. God is the author of truth, and we can always count on the things that He says in His Word. We also have the choice as to whether or not we will speak the truth to people. It’s not always easy to speak the truth, but it is best.

The Big Question

When do you tend to lie? Do you lie to get out of trouble, to make yourself look good, or possibly to get your way? Even exaggeration can lead you to having a reputation of being unreliable. As you close your time today thank God that He speaks the truth. Ask Him to help you to do the same.
