Receiving Rescue

May 27, 2020

Psalm 107:6-7

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way
to a city where they could settle.

Acts 7:9-10

“Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.

Devotion

Yesterday we saw that the first component to realizing God’s unfailing love is to “cry out” or request God’s help. Today we will discover the second component of realizing God’s unfailing love is to receive God’s rescue. In verse six, it says, “They cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.” God delivered or rescued them. Throughout this Psalm, David uses different words to explain how God is a God of rescue. It is important to note however that God’s deliverance is always on His terms. We cannot bargain with God over the details of our rescue. He will rescue us in a way that is consistent with His character. When we look at the person and work of Christ, we see that God was working in human history to rescue mankind from their fallen state. He did this by sacrificing His own Son. What kind of rescue plan was this? This doesn’t make sense to the human intellect, but God’s ways are not our ways, and God’s thoughts are not our thoughts.

God offers reconciliation to those who will put their trust in the person and work of Christ. There is no other way! This is God’s offer of rescue or deliverance to all mankind. All you must do is receive in faith what God so freely offers. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). “Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

Questions to Ponder:

Have you received God’s rescue? Have you put your faith in the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world? Are you a child of God who has been rescued from the penalty, power, and presence of sin?

Prayer Points

  • Thank the LORD for your salvation. Pray for your Top 3 and for those in your sphere of influence who are not yet Christians.
