Psalm 107:1-3

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever.

Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
those he gathered from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.

1 John 4:7-16

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

Devotion

Psalm 107 is an exhortation to praise the Lord for His unfailing love! This is also a song of redemption. David is reminding the people of Israel how God has RESCUED them from homelessness, bondage, affliction, and the storms of life. Now David is calling on the people to declare the fact that God is their only rescuer. David begins this song with the declaration that God is good. David does not come to this conclusion because it is what he was taught. David experienced the goodness of God throughout his life. David writes this based on personal experience. He begins this song by declaring that God is good!

Then David gives thanks for God’s unfailing love. Just as David experienced God’s goodness, he also had firsthand experience when it came to God’s unfailing love. David experienced God’s love whether he was on the mountaintop of life or in the valley of the shadow of death. David frequently writes about God’s love because to him this was one of God’s main attributes. Then David writes, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so…” Those who have been rescued by God should declare his goodness and love for all the world to hear. We need more “say so” Christians in the world today. How will the world know of God’s unfailing love if we don’t testify of it?

Questions to Ponder:

Are you quick to give thanks to the Lord for His goodness and unfailing love? Do you regularly tell others how God rescued you from your sin? Who is your top three?

Prayer Points

  • Ask God to enable you and the church to trust in His unfailing love
  • Declare to God that He is good even in the midst of tension, suffering, loss or walking in the unknown.

Suggested Prayer
Eternal Father, I praise You as the Author and Finisher of my faith! We confess that we loved to be loved by You oh God, for You are so easy to love and easy to trust.

We declare that Your loving kindness is overwhelming, Reveal Your heart to each of us afresh through Your Word and through Your Spirit, oh God.

I am asking Father that through Your glorious riches you would strength us with power through Your Holy Spirit so that Christ may dwell in each of our hearts by faith. Father, I ask that we all will be rooted and established in love, that we may have power together with all the saints to grasp how deep and wide and long the love of Jesus Christ is. Then send us out to those in our midst to show and share the love of Christ. I ask in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
