Song of Solomon 8:5-7

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

Who is this coming up from the wilderness leaning on her beloved? Under the apple tree I roused you; there your mother conceived you, there she who was in labor gave you birth. Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned.

– Song of Solomon 8:5-7

Devotion

In this section, Solomon gives a description of love (see also 1 Corinthians 13). The mature lover knows that love is as strong as death; it cannot be killed by time or disaster. Love is priceless; even the richest king cannot buy it. Romantic love is a gift from God and is meant to be shared within the guidelines God provides. Those who are married should accept the love of their spouse as God’s gift and strive to make their love a reflection of God’s perfect love.

The Big Question

In 1 Corinthians 13:4-6, Paul describes fourteen characteristics of love: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

Which of these characteristics do you need God’s help with? Ask God to help you love this way, without expecting anything in return.

Conclude your time in prayer and silence reflecting on what you have learned.
