You Are Light

July 21, 2020

Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

John 8:12

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Devotion

The second analogy that Jesus uses is “light.” The purpose of light is to illuminate the darkness. Light reveals the things that cannot be seen in the dark. This means we are to be a light in our neighborhood and wherever we go. We should be revealing the truth concerning Jesus in our everyday lives. I have heard it said, “Be careful how you live. You might be the only Bible some person ever reads.” Just as Jesus came as the Light of the world to reveal the Father, we are called to take the light and truth of Jesus everywhere we go! Being a light means giving out the Word of God in one way or another. We are called to share the light or truth that God has given us regarding His Son.

There are many ways in which we can be the light of the world. We can do this with a verbal testimony for Christ. We can also do this in our everyday interactions with others. We must not only share Jesus’ words but also His life with others. This means we should reflect His character in all that we say and do. Take notice that when we reflect the light of Christ in our world, God is glorified in heaven. The Sermon on the Mount is God-centered. In this day in which we live, our prime motivation should be to bring glory to God. The ultimate aim or purpose of our lives should be to glorify God. Jesus did not come into this world with His own agenda. He submitted to the will of the Father and ultimately revealed the Father to us.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” So, let your light shine!

Questions to Ponder:

How are you letting the light of Jesus shine in your world? How are you revealing the truth of Jesus to your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and family? Why is letting your light shine in this post-truth culture so important?
